NoGi vs Gi Jiu-Jitsu: Why KŌVA Trains NoGi

NoGi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is grappling without the kimono: shorts and a rash guard, no cloth to grab, so control comes from underhooks, wrist control and body locks. Gi Jiu-Jitsu uses the jacket and pants for grips and chokes. KŌVA in Richardson trains NoGi only because grips on the body are faster and transfer directly to MMA.

What is the actual difference between gi and NoGi?

Both are Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The positions are the same: mount, guard, side control, back control. The goal is the same: control your opponent, advance position, finish with a submission or escape. What changes is what you are allowed to hold on to.

Compare Gi NoGi
What you wear Kimono jacket, pants and belt Rash guard and shorts or leggings
What you grip Collars, sleeves, pant legs, belt Wrists, neck, underhooks, body locks
Pace Slower and more static; grips stall movement Faster; without cloth, positions slip and you have to keep moving
Chokes Collar and lapel chokes plus arm and leg chokes Arm and leg chokes only: guillotines, rear naked chokes, triangles
Feels closest to Judo, sambo Wrestling, MMA grappling
What you buy A gi, and a second one for wash days Nothing you do not already own

In the gi, a strong grip on a sleeve or collar can hold a position for a long time. In NoGi, sweat and skin make every grip temporary, so you learn to control with your body (frames, underhooks, head position, pressure) instead of your hands. That is why NoGi tends to be faster and more scramble-heavy.

Which is better for a beginner?

Honest answer: you can learn Jiu-Jitsu either way, and plenty of great grapplers started in a gi. But for a beginner walking into a Richardson gym with no experience, NoGi has three practical advantages.

  1. Fewer variables. The gi adds dozens of grips to learn, defend and untangle. NoGi strips that away so you can focus on the things that matter in every version of grappling: posture, frames, hip movement and underhooks.
  2. Nothing to buy. Your first NoGi class at KŌVA is free and you show up in a shirt and shorts you already own. There is no uniform, and no second uniform for when the first one is in the wash.
  3. The habits transfer. Because you cannot rely on cloth, the control you learn in NoGi works when there is no cloth: in MMA, in wrestling, and on a hot day in a T-shirt.

Fundamentals are taught in every class at KŌVA, and most of the people on the mat started with no experience. Nobody spars in a first class, so a beginner’s first weeks are technique and cooperative drilling, not survival.

Which transfers better to MMA?

NoGi, and it is not close. There is no gi in MMA. Every grip, every takedown and every submission in a fight happens on skin, sweat and a pair of shorts, which is exactly the problem NoGi trains you to solve. Wrestling, the clinch, body-lock takedowns, guillotines and rear naked chokes are the shared language of NoGi and MMA grappling.

At KŌVA the path runs straight through the NoGi room. The MMA class is for members with at least six months of BJJ and striking; beginners start in Boxing, Muay Thai or Jiu-Jitsu and move into MMA when a coach clears them. Six months of NoGi means that when you arrive in the MMA class, the grappling already feels familiar.

Which is better for self-defense?

This is the one argument gi advocates make well: people wear jackets, and gi grips look like jacket grips. That is true, and it is worth knowing how to use a collar if one is there.

But it cuts both ways. Most of the time there is no jacket, or it comes off, or it tears. NoGi assumes you have nothing to hold but the person, and it trains you to control someone using their body rather than their clothing. The positions that end a self-defense situation, getting up safely, controlling someone from the top, escaping from the bottom, staying off your back, are the same in both, and NoGi teaches them at the pace a real situation happens.

What does a NoGi class at KŌVA look like?

Adult NoGi classes run Monday and Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 PM and Saturday from noon to 1:30 PM, all levels. Amr teaches Monday and Saturday; I teach Wednesday. Women’s BJJ, a women-only class with Nina, runs Saturday from 3 to 4 PM.

A class is 90 minutes: a warm-up, two or three techniques taught step by step, and partner drilling where you set the pace. Once you are past your first class, positional rounds come before live rounds, so you build control before speed. Every technique starts from the position a beginner actually finds themselves in, not from a competition highlight.

What do you wear for NoGi?

A rash guard or fitted athletic shirt, shorts or leggings with no pockets or zippers, bare feet on the mat, and a mouthguard once you start rolling. That is the full list; we wrote a complete first-class checklist if you want the details. NoGi Jiu-Jitsu needs no uniform.
